What is World Toilet Day?!

World Toilet Day is observed annually on 19 November. This international day of action aims to break the taboo around toilets and draw attention to the global sanitation challenge by showing that toilets can be fun and sexy as well as vital to life.

Can you imagine not having a toilet? Can you imagine not having privacy when you need to relieve yourself? Although unthinkable for those living in wealthy parts of the world, this is a harsh reality for many – in fact, one in three people on this globe, does not have access to a toilet! Have you ever thought about the true meaning of dignity?

2.5 billion people live without a toilet – a number that’s smaller than the amount of people who own a cellphone – is simply an issue of inequity, as experts point out that lack of safe sanitation is a matter of lacking infrastructure.

Proper facilities can help fight combat child deaths due to water-related diseases. Diarrhea is still the second leading cause of death for kids five and under, through over the past few years, the number of children who die per second due to water-related diseases is down from four to three, according to Water.org.

This is the tagline of the new global World Toilet Day campaign put together by the Water, Supply & Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) and the World Toilet Organization (WTO).

The campaign is designed as an online campaign, to cast its net far and wide to get the attention of not just those working on these issues already, but also decision makers and the public. Through its recently launched website you can:
• Share the key campaign messages
• Advocate for better sanitation by hosting an event and register your activities on the interactive World Toilet Day map
• Promote World Toilet Day by using the logo, posters, banners, stickers and brochure
• Tell the world why You Give A Shit!
• Help the word on Facebook and Twitter.
