A Free Spirit

Recently a friend of mine labeled me as a “free spirit” person, and this isn’t the first time to hear that.

Yes I’m kinda of this label. I’m not selfish but I have been independent for long and I know how to do things because I want to do them.

Still I can’t function when I feel restricted. I don’t like when people, whether beloved ones or friends, or even coworker insist on me following certain rules to fit.

I hardly seek routine and that’s why I love waking up every morning, knowing that this day will be vastly different from the last.

People think because I don’t share much about my feelings that I do not have any worries. That’s not true, I worry a lot. But if something is not worth my time, I just move on. Life is short and I learnt that the harsh way.

YES I don’t mind being alone. I don’t even mind sitting at home on my own. I lived alone for many years and I loved my life.

Still I love having friends to hangout with but I don’t like that my relationships with others define me. In fact, I don’t really let anything define me. I know me, happy for being me, and I fought a lot to be that woman.

I like seeking ways to expand my mind, enjoy working with creative people because that inspires me a lot. I always want to be a better person in this missed up world.

In the end I can tell you I live my life without selling my soul to the devil. I had lots of good and bad experiences. I don’t just love. I love unconditionally, but I don’t mind if people drift away.

Damn, time flies! I have to leave office now and run, I’m gonna meet some old peeps haha! Then I’m so looking forward for my day off tomorrow. I will have a big lunch with a lovely friend and I can’t wait!!

IWD – Middle East Perspective ღ

_DSF3599

Because I am a woman, I must make unusual efforts to succeed, If I fail, no one will say, she doesn’t have what it takes. They will say, women don’t have what it takes.

Happy International Women’s Day to all women around the world!

Though the Arab Spring offered great promise for helping women gain equal human rights in the Middle East, the reality was that not a lot changed.

Women currently make up 49.7% of around 345.5 million people in the Middle East and North Africa region. But despite the many advances made in terms of closing the gender gap in health, political representation, and labor force participation, many other barriers remain.

In my country – Egypt – there is a popular saying: “Break a girl’s rib, and she’ll grow two”.

– Spousal rape is not recognised in the laws.

– A woman inherits half of what a man inherits.

– A Muslim man can marry a non-Muslim woman, but a Muslim woman can not marry a non-Muslim man

– Sexual harassment and assault of women and girls in public spaces still exist in spite of the efforts to combat the practice.

Though Egypt is often considered  as one of the more liberal countries in the Middle East being a female isn’t an easy thing.

On International Women Day we don’t celebrate as much as we fight for many rights we want to gain, for respect, appreciation, equality and much more

Still there is hope because women activists, who generally come from the educated segments of society are challenging the status quo; demanding equality in the family and society and calling for women’s economic, political, and social empowerment.

Dreaming of Spring

IMG_0171

Spring in Sweden was like a dream. Lollll! After a sunny week, we are back to the cold, foggy and raining weather. Oh and next week will be marked by snow and bone-chilling temperatures.

Still Swedes do celebrate spring’s arrival when the median daily temperature is on the rise and remains between 0C and 10C for at least seven days in a row.

I thought that once they announce the arrival of spring, we will witness the not so hot, not so cold weather.

In other words, a LAGOM weather.

Lagom is a uniquely Swedish term that doesn’t have any literal translation in English but basically means ‘not too much, not too little”, Just the right amount, sufficient average.

Meh we will have to wait to see if the real spring will arrive or we will just skip that season from our calendar!!

Still I went shopping for a spring floral bouquet to lighten up my life 🙂
